To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Chien-Yu Chen and I invite you to get to know me. Since my childhood, my dream job has been one where my contributions to the institution, its environment and its people overwhelm my benefits from them. My aspiration has matured over the years, with a more realistic yet similar perspective and a more precise region—Korea. After almost 24 years in the States spent determinedly identifying my strengths and weaknesses, my forte is unquestionably in my native language—English.
After wrapping up my student life with almost five years of quality education at UC Davis, I have taken my more-than-two-decades-worth of education with me here to Korea. Among other lessons, being a student has taught me that teachers and students do not have a one-way relationship—that teachers consciously bestow their knowledge and wisdom to their students, but subconsciously receive the very same things from the latter. I have learned that it is absolutely possible to make seemingly tedious and unpleasant things, which for students may be school and studying, rather enjoyable. Moreover, I am constantly reminded of why I teach and love teaching.
My almost 24 years States-side does my multi-cultural and travel-filled experiences little if any justice. Being in a new and unfamiliar environment excites rather than intimidates me thanks to my successive encounters with diverse surroundings and individuals growing up. My Taiwanese ancestry initially placed me in an Asian household. History, while being among my favorite subjects, has together with my lineage ultimately blessed me with the opportunity to study the Japanese language and culture and experience it first-hand. Excluding my travels abroad, spending my entire life in California—arguably the most socially and culturally diverse state alongside New York—has, among other things, been the birthplace of my somewhat distinctive and curious outlook on unfamiliar environments. These all help define me and make me suitable for a teaching career in Korea.
Set on teaching English in Korea, you have captured my attention with our shared goal of inspiring and educating the students entrusted to teachers like us through innovative and interactive ways and with your environment where my fun-loving and open-minded yet sincere and dependable nature can enhance and be part of the community. A recent university graduate, I am enthusiastic about my prospects and would like to schedule an interview with you. I would also like to thank you for your consideration and hope to work with you in my efforts to further my career in teaching English and to share my life with the people I work with.
