 Cover Letter
Dear committee,

In March 2003, Scud missiles hit our base, Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia. While I was hiding in chemical gear and hoping bombs didn’t disperse biological agents, I had plenty of time to think about what I would regret not fulfilling in my life if I died: writing a poetry collection and teaching. The deployments made me feel like I was just a pawn in a global chess tournament that was causing more problems than it was solving. I want to make a difference in someone’s life, whether it’s teaching, inspiring them with a poem, or helping shape their future.

I look forward to teaching ESL again. I taught ESL for four years in Korea, worked at the Texas State Writing Center, where I taught graduate and undergraduate students technical writing skills for two and a half years, helped Korean and Chinese students with the TOEFL, and led a creative writing workshop for a year. This last spring, I taught three class sessions as an Instructional Assistant in English 2360, plus two sessions in English 3301. Dr. Deb Balzhiser and Ben Reed can vouch for my teaching ability. Also, Assistant Dean, Dr. Nancy Grayson and Professor Kathleen Peirce can speak to my passion for teaching and ability to effectively represent your school with the honor of being on the faculty.

I fundamentally believe that for professional success, future goals need to align with past achievements and present focus. With my teaching and military background, excellent academic credentials, and people skills as well as a deep interest in bringing about a change in veteran’s creative writing world, I am convinced that a coveted lecturing position at your educational institute is the best career step for me. Poetry and teaching, my most enduring passions define my sense of purpose. I have proved to myself that my commitment to these crafts merit a higher teaching position. I hope I can prove the same to you, and thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,

James
