Teaching Experience |
As a part of my TEFL certification course, I was required to do 20 hours of practicum. For 9 hours I observed various ESL classes and tutored Luana, an ESL student from Italy, for the remaining 11 hours.
Before my first tutoring session with Luana, I wrote out a little test with things like fill in the proper article, what are all of the tenses for the verb to be, past tense of certain verbs, and write your name.
On August 24, 2016, Luana got 100% on the test. As I started talking to her, I realized that she could speak English very well due to having studied English since elementary school in Italy. However, she would say things like, “Navid and I took a pizza last night” instead of “Navid and I had pizza last night.” I would bring the corrections to her attention and she was diligent about documenting and correcting them. Her desire was to learn phrasal verbs since all she had studied in primary school was English grammar.
Honestly, I had never heard the term phrasal verb, so I didn’t know what they were until I looked up the meaning. We played charades, guessing games, tongue twisters, and had story time. For one warm-up, I brought along some random personal pictures. This day we were joined by her Japanese friend. Both of them chose five photos. As they created a story about each photo, I wrote down exactly what they said. Then, I corrected their mistakes.
This practicum was so helpful to me. Even though I still have not had much experience teaching an ESL class, I am grateful to have tutored and observed an ESL student and some ESL classes. |
Explain About Your Personality |
I am the happiest and most motivated when I am solving problems, mentoring, teaching, and helping people succeed. I get really excited when the people I have coached or supported have a breakthrough or achieve a new accomplishment.
Also, I am a practical, hands on person which means I like producing real and tangible results. I am driven to bring things into existence which is why teaching English would be the perfect way to help my students learn practical and applicable skills.
