Teaching Experience |
While I studied abroad for a semester in Salzburg, Austria, I volunteered at a private secondary school, St. Josef. Every Wednesday for an hour, I worked as an assistant to the English teacher and taught the students English lessons. These lessons varied from grammar, to verb tenses and agreements, sentence structure, etc. I had the time of my life and was able to make relationships with the students. The students were all approximately 14 years old. Each week, I looked forward to going and seeing the students because sometimes we would just practice conversations in English. As the semester went on, the students grew more and more comfortable and that was one of the best parts of my study abroad experience. This experience has really motivated me to apply for a Fulbright and to continue to help others learn English, while growing as a person and learning about other cultures.
In addition, As a member of my sorority, Pi Beta Phi, I have committed countless hours of reading to underprivileged school children. Our foundation created Read, Lead, and Achieve, which is a foundation that promotes and advocates literacy throughout the country, especially to underprivileged families and schools. In the Lincoln community, each year, we volunteer at a local elementary school and help the children read. I provide each student a workbook with activities to better their literacy and we work through a few pages each visit. We help the children learn how to read and teach them basic English lessons.
For a year I worked as a staff worker at an afterschool program through Willard Community Center. I lead group crafts and activities with elementary-aged students. I also lead sports and games. I instructed the kids to follow tasks and taught them lessons.
I have also served as a “Big Sister” in the Heartland Big Brother Big Sister outreach program in Lincoln. I served as a mentor to a girl named Dustie, which included meeting with her to participate in fun activities while being her role model and giving her advice in any and all aspects of life.
