Standard Work Conditions

The following are the standard work conditions for the ESL teacher who wants to work in Korea. 〔Most of academies(Hagwon) have their own employment contracts including the specific work conditions.〕

▒ Period of contract: One year(12 months).
* E-2 Visa holder can stay in Korea for one year(12months), but it is renewable.

▒ Salary: 2 to 2.4 million won per a month
* Its amount is different depending on your career and position.

▒ Teaching hours: 120 hours per month
  ① Monday through Friday//30 hours (1800 minutes) per week
  ② 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM each day//7 hours(420 minutes) per day
* Seven(7) hours above include dinner break about 50 -60 minutes. Thus, you actually teach the
  students for six(6) hours per day(30 hours per week).

▒ Length of each class: about 45 to 50 minutes.

▒ Class size : 10 to 15 students each class

▒ Overtime pay : 17,000 to 23,000 won per hour

▒ Vacation: 10 days paid vacation per year(12 months)

▒ Paid sick days : You may use maximum three(3) paid sick days per year
                        (12 months).

▒ Severance pay: It will be paid when you complete a full-year(12months)contract.
   Its amount is same as that of your monthly salary.

▒ Housing :
  ① Academies usually provide a private apartment with furnishings, facilities, and etc. that are basically
     required for living. However, some academies that have more than two foreign teachers may ask you
     to share the apartment with other teachers.
  ② Academies withhold 400,000 to 700,000won from your salary as a deposit. It is usually withheld in
     two monthly installments deducted from your salary. The deposit is supposed to cover unpaid bills,
     damaged facilities or furnishings at the end of the contract. If you pay all the bills and don't damage
     anything in your apartment, it will be given back to you. }
  ③ You must pay some amount of apartment management fee(20,000 to 30,000won/month) which is
     used for cleaning the building stairways and other public places.

▒ Air fare support: Round trip economy class tickets.
* In case you pay for the air ticket to come to Korea, its cost is reimbursed by the academy within a
  week after your arrival.

▒ Medical care insurance : You will be covered by medical benefits under the
Korean Medical Insurance Union, a Government Health Organization. Thus, you may join the mentioned union if you want. The total amount of the insurance cost to be paid every month is about 6% of your salary. Its half is paid by the academy.
